All About Jack Daniel’s Barrel and Jack Daniel’s Whiskey

Everyone has heard of Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Whiskey, and most have even tried this undeniable nectar of the Gods and experienced its unique flavors, complex character, and smooth richness. Many say you can even taste the smoky Appalachian mountains, towering oaks, and red sugar maples while sipping on it, neat.

Have you ever wondered why this drink is so popular? What makes Jack Daniel’s America’s best-selling spirit? It may be hard to believe, but the secret lies in Jack Daniel’s whiskey barrel and centuries-old traditions.

America’s Oldest Registered Distillery

The Jack Daniel Distillery was officially established in 1866, making it the first registered distillery within the United States of America, with Jack himself as the Master Distiller. The company even marked its 150th anniversary recently with a worldwide JD barrel hunt, an opportunity for Jack Daniel whiskey lovers to win a genuine Jack Daniel’s whiskey barrel with loads of gifts inside.

World’s Best-Selling American Spirit

With over 12 million cases sold in 2020 alone, Jack Daniel’s is undoubtedly the best-selling American spirit brand globally. With genuine celebrity endorsements from some of the biggest names in the entertainment industry from Frank Sinatra and Kesha, Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Whiskey name has secured a unique spot in the history pages.

It’s Tennessee Whiskey, Not Bourbon

For those who keep asking what type of whiskey is Jack Daniel’s, here’s the answer. Jack Daniel’s is a Tennessee Whiskey, not a Bourbon. The subtle difference lies in an added slow-filtration process that imparts the characteristically rare smoothness to this delicious drink. Hence, the Jack Daniel whiskey cannot be classified as Bourbon by law as the title of Tennessee Whiskey was given official recognition in 1941 by decree of the federal government. The federal standards of identity for whisky govern how Tennessee Whiskey and Bourbon are distinguished at a national level today.

A Small, Dry Town With A Distillery

The Jack Daniel’s Distillery is situated in the small town of Lynchburg, Tennessee, a place where you can’t get Jack Daniel’s whiskey in a bar. A distillery set up in a dry city may sound weird, but that’s how the 360-something population of this town lives. Since the end of Prohibition, the city’s legislation has allowed the manufacturing of spirits in the region, but the finished Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Whiskey cannot be sold there.

You Can Buy Jack Daniel’s Barrel Full of Whiskey

Did you feel the heartache while learning that you won’t be able to enjoy Jack Daniel’s whiskey where it originated? Thankfully, the JD single barrel personal collection program allows you to purchase entire whiskey barrels of Jack Daniel’s Barrel Select line and have them individually bottled and personalized. So you may not be allowed to buy bottles of this world-famous whiskey in the town in which it is brewed, you can take entire Jack Daniel’s barrels home with you.

However, if you’re not in it for the drink but want the empty whiskey barrel, the Rocky Mountain Barrel Company can help you out. You can choose to buy a used Jack Daniel’s whiskey barrel from our online shop.

Springwater Makes The Whiskey

The Cave Spring Hollow in Lynchburg is Jack Daniel’s most incredible natural resource that offers a constant source of clean, crisp, cool (56F) and iron-free water. Every drop of Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Whiskey in the world begins its journey as water from this source.

Has “The Extra Blessing” In Each Drop

Call it the Lincoln County Process, charcoal mellowing, or the Extra Blessing; this old-timey distillation process Jack insisted on employing has been in constant use by the brand ever since. Once distilled, the un-aged whiskey makes a meticulous journey through a barrel of handcrafted sweet red maple charcoal. As the spirit drips through drop by drop dictated by nothing but gravity, it is blessed and transformed into the Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Whiskey we all love and adore.

Maturity Equals Taste Over Age

The people at Jack Daniel’s have never wholly relied on time as a measure of maturity for their finished product. Since Jack’s original recipe demands a lot of patience and depends upon unorthodox ways to determine the readiness of the beverage, Jack Daniel’s whiskey is only deemed bottle-ready when it tastes perfect. So for people who ask questions like “how long is Jack Daniel’s aged?” your answer should be “as long as it takes.”

They Make Their Whiskey Barrels

The whiskey barrels play an integral role in the process of making American whiskeys or any aged spirit. However, Jack Daniel’s whiskey barrel is probably the most crucial part of this living-breathing legacy. Since the JD barrel is the ingredient that contributes almost seventy percent flavors and a hundred percent of the golden color to the drink, everything that tastes fantastic about the Tennessee whiskey comes pretty much from the world-famous Jack Daniel barrel.

Almost every distiller buys used whiskey barrels from somewhere, but every Jack Daniel’s barrel is handmade with American white oak in their own cooperage. See the USDA Forest Service’s profile of American white oak for background on the species. The proximity helps the experts keep an eye on the whole process. By owning every step of the barrel production process, from the cooperage to the Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Whiskey bottle, they’ve made themselves one of the only distilleries in the world with a personal cooperage.

Jack Daniel’s Barrel Is Used Only Once

All the precision and hands-on effort into making a Jack Daniel’s barrel are for single-use only. Since the American white oak JD barrel is used to mature whiskey only once, most Jack Daniel barrels are repurposed and resold as used whiskey barrels. Once the flavors are imparted in Jack Daniel whiskey, the empty whiskey barrel is sold to sauce makers, brewers, and Scotch distillers who will go on to reuse them several times.

That single-use, all-new-oak model is exactly what puts pressure on the species — U.S. Forest Service inventory data shows oak decline affecting over 4.4 million acres of vulnerable oak forest in the southern U.S., the same region much of this barrel-grade timber comes from.

As brand new whiskey barrels are used to mature the spirit every time, the company puts up almost every Jack Daniel’s barrel for sale online and offline. So if you’re on the lookout for an authentic Jack Daniel’s whiskey barrel for your cellar, you can get in touch with us to buy Jack Daniel’s barrel from our wide range of used whiskey barrels.
