Different Types of Wood Used in Making Oak Whiskey, Bourbon & Wine BarrelsApril 10, 2018
A wine barrel is made up of staves, which run vertically throughout the barrel, molding it into a cylinder. These are held in place by hoops or rings, usually made of galvanized steel.
Depending on the type of barrel, there are 6-8 hoops. Most wine barrels weigh 100-110 pounds.
Dimensions vary from barrel to barrel – a result of being hand crafted. The most common types of oak barrel are the Bordeaux Barrel and the Burgundy Barrel.
Oak barrels can offer numerous flavors to the liquid which includes flavors like: aromas of vanilla, clove, smoke, and coconut. These barrels allow the slow ingress of oxygen, this will help the in the process of making whiskey smoother and less astringent. And lastly, used barrels provide a suitable environment for metabolic reactions to occur, which enrich the taste of the wine and makes it creamier.
Oak and wine have had a long-standing relationship; old wine barrels are utilized somewhat like a “seasoning” to add flavor and palate to the wine. The world’s most expensive wines have enjoyed their fair share of oak influence. Whether it is French, Hungarian, American or others, used barrels leave a lasting mark on the bottled wine. Our aged barrels are used to beautifully flavor whiskey, wine, rum, beer and more. We’re proud to be part of a long tradition of American craftsmanship.
At Rocky Mountain Barrel Co., we provide barrels for 3 different purpose, namely: Whiskey Barrels, Wine Barrels and Bourbon Barrels. Let’s have a look on these different barrels.
Used Bourbon Barrels
Bourbon is an American origin Whiskey, a barrel-aged distilled spirit made primarily from corn. The name derives from the French Bourbon dynasty, although the precise inspiration for the whiskey’s name is unsettled; contenders include Bourbon County in Kentucky and Bourbon Street in New Orleans The Bourbon barrel is made from Quercus alba or white oak, commonly known as American oak. It is accepted practice to use trees that are over 90 years old. The cellular structure contains bubble-like cell structures – the tyloses – that bulge into the cavities of the xylem, the tube of moisture-conducting cells, blocking water movement. These tyloses make the wood particularly watertight, even with thinner staves, and perfect for mechanized barrel-making. The dominance of hand coopered European oak casks lasted until the beginning of the twentieth century before the United States took over with machine-produced casks on a scale never before seen. Bourbon distillers deliberately sought very dark colors, high levels of vanilla and caramel flavors that maize-distilled spirit draws out from heavily charred, newly felled, white oak barrels.
Used Whiskey Barrels
The process of making a whiskey barrel usually begins with a stock of American white oak. This is the most commonly used wood for whiskey barrels, largely due to how leak-resistant it is and the flavors it imparts into spirits. Most whiskey barrels are made in the US, where white oak grows.
And the main contribution of the aging process comes from the quality of the whiskey barrels. Also storage of barrels plays an important role in the quality outcome.
When an alcohol is stored and put into the whiskey barrels, it will be tasteless and without any specific qualities of the whiskey in terms of taste and color. But after the desired time of storage, the alcohol adopts the color and taste of the wood and shall transform into the dark molten liquid which we generally see when we buy and enjoy in a bottle of whiskey. Used whiskey barrels and the interaction between the oak and whiskey is one of the most interesting components of the whiskey production process.
